Thank you for your article. I can tell you another reason YOU should go to events---because you are awesome. I met you at at Tweetup in the beginning of the year (I think, I don't remember when), but the way you so kindly answered someone's questions without batting an eye so impressed me.

I was sitting there thinking, "She should be charging for this info." Because I felt like he was really asking a lot of questions and you were just talking sharing the information freely. You were kind and attentive. You left a HUGE impression on me.

Not only do I try to be like you in that respect (freely sharing information), I tell everyone that story about that Tweetup. I kind of point you out as a model business woman.

Thank you.

PS I think I told you this story on FB too. I will stop re-telling it to you! :-)

I agree with Sophfronia that each author must decide what they want out of publishing a book and how much they want to put into it in terms of time and money before they can make an informed choice regarding their publishing path.

If you wish to put a book out as inexpensively as possible (which often means forgoing professional cover design, page layout, and/or copyediting), then you can go to Xlibris or iUniverse or other publishers of that ilk and complete your book relatively quickly. And if that satisfies you and is what you want, more power to you: It's why those companies are in business.

But if you want to have a well-designed and edited book, it costs more and, frankly, it's not nearly as easy. Ask any author who has wrangled with an editor over their writing or worked through the agonizing process of a cover design with a graphic designer. It can be hell--a good kind of hell because you end up with a great book, but hell just the same. A good subsidy publisher, to my mind, is similar to a traditional publishing house in that they try to do their best for their authors, even when it goes counter to what their authors think they want.

I have a dog in this fight: I'm part-owner of a subsidy publisher; we also do book packaging for other small publishers. We do our best to make writers who approach us immediately aware of how we operate and what they can expect in the publishing process. And the subsidy publishing industry as a whole could do a much better job of that kind of transparency. It's the basis for trust--and if you can't trust your publisher, you're in for the bad kind of hell, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the great reminder. Once of the aha moments I had when I transitioned from W-2 to 1099 work was that I should have been investing in myself much sooner in my career. Today, I am always learning something new, and it makes a huge difference in the success in my business and in my overall happiness.
