Big Visions versus Realistic Expectations
January 24, 2008 by Elizabeth Potts Weinstein
Did "The Secret" movie & all the "Law of Attraction" stuff out there cause us all to forget reality?
Yes, it’s true that with big visions, setting powerful intentions, and asking the powers that be for what you want, can be amazing and powerful — and get you results. But most of us are making 2 huge mistakes when we try to apply these principles to our life.
- Action is Required. And It May Be Really Scary Action. Yes, it’s true, that sometimes miracles can happen, and you can set an intention of receiving $100,000 and win the lottery 30 days later. But that’s not how it usually works. When you set powerful intentions, the universe just provides a door. It’s up to you to walk through the door. And it may be really scary, taking a huge personal and/or financial risk to walk through that door. In a way it’s a test — how much do you actually want your big Vision? Are you will to take the Big Risk?
- It May Take Time & Money. As you are setting amazing intentions for your business, you must make realistic plans for how your goals could come about. How long will it take to build that list, how much money will you need to spend on AdWords, how long will you need to live off your savings until you make a profit. Now it may be that something amazing will happen and you will succeed faster than you could possible imagine … but most likely before that happens you will have to take tons of Action … which requires time & (at least some) money.
So how do you deal with this issue?
For a small business, one secret is to use Cash Flow Projections. I speak a lot about Cash Flow Projections in my other blog at Grow Up Strategies … but the short answer is that you must make predictions about when and how much your income and expenses will be for this new or growing business. First, you can see if even in your dream scenario do you make money, and second, how long (and how much money it will take) until you will start making a profit. Then, you can take Action and troubleshoot issues using real numbers, and you can make an educated guess about how much time and money you may need to realize your Vision.
